STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENT: CHRISTINE TRUJILLO
Over the next week, lawmakers must address the following facts during the special session: The student funding unit value cuts ($60 per unit), which they passed last January, have not worked. We’re right back where we started, another budget deficit. This time at least $500 million, maybe more. Read more.

Sunday, October 17th - AFT New Mexico released a poll on education cuts, closing corporate tax loopholes, rolling back tax cuts for wealthiest New Mexicans. Scientific poll results demonstrate registered voters overwhelmingly oppose any more student value cuts and education cuts. The poll was conducted by Research and Polling. Read more.

More than 3,200 New Mexicans from across the state went to Santa Fe on Friday, Oct. 9. Their rally sent a clear message to state lawmakers: Don't cut student values when you meet Oct. 17 in a special session. Rally participants said, "If lawmakers want to cut something, they better cut those tax breaks they gave the wealthiest New Mexicans in 2003, and they better close tax loopholes for big, out-of-state corporations. Here is how the Oct. 9 rally was covered by the media.

New Mexico’s lawmakers are planning to cut funding for preK-12 school children again, unless we go to the State Capitol Friday, October 9. If lawmakers cut the student value again, students will suffer more and school districts will be forced to layoff EAs, CSLs, CSAs and teachers.

Gov. Richardson has responded to AEAA COPE’s petition drive to roll back tax cuts for richest New Mexicans, close tax loopholes for big out-of-state corporations, and use revenues to restore the $30 lawmakers cut from the 2009-2010 preK-12 student funding value and stop further education cuts. He said, “Perhaps some of the tax cuts have outlived their usefulness.”

New Mexicans have been consistent in their views of favoring adequate education funding over spending on tax breaks and abatements. According to voters, cutting education is not ok. Polling results are clear. When New Mexicans are given the choice to fund education and prevent cuts versus keeping tax breaks on the books - voters overwhelmingly prefer funding education. According to a Legislative Finance Committee study, Educational Retirement Board (ERB) fund and Permanent School Fund investments last year were bad enough to rank them among the worst performing funds of their kind in the nation. But, beginning July 1, state lawmakers are going to force education employees, who earn more than $20,000 a year, to pay more of their much-needed spending money into the ERB by raising retirement deductions.

Classified public school employees (workers paid by the hour) and teachers who are employed by the Cuba Board of Education now have a new contract with the Board. The new contract is called The Negotiated Agreement. The contract can be viewed, downloaded and printed if you have an Adobe Reader program on your computer.
