AFT NM President Ly Commends Educators’ Action; Criticizes Administration’s Record of Non-Support
On November 20, tens of thousands of educators across the state of New Mexico sent a unified message that they are ready to take back the time for teaching, joy of learning and professionalism in public education.
On November 20th, tens of thousands of educators around the state wore black to take back the joy of learning, time for teaching and professionalism in public education. Educators are protesting Events took place around the state and were covered by local and state media.
Says AFT NM President Stephanie Ly, "We believe this governor and PED are destroying public education in NM. It is our obligation to the communities, students, and educators to advocate for reclaiming the promise to a world class public education system in NM."

On September 19, 2013, eight educational assistants traveled to Clovis, New Mexico to testify to the Legislative Educational Study Council (LESC). They were invited to tell their stories about the work that they do in the classroom and the need for living wages for classified employees.
‘I work as a nursing assistant...the work I do matters to the students who depend on my care and I do it because I love it but it is unfair that after 15 years of employment I earn only $15,000 a year,” said Kathy Sanchez a health assistant for APS.
