SENATE RULES COMMITTEE VOTES NOT TO CONFIRM HANNA SKANDERA AS EDUCATION SECRETARY

In a 6-4 vote this morning, the Senate Rules Committee voted not to confirm Hanna Skandera as Education Secretary. The vote was a firm rejection of Governor Martinez’s and Ms. Skandera’s policies of corporate deform, including the heavy focus on high-stakes, standardized testing.

“The voices of the 2,700 educators, parents, students and community members that marched in Santa Fe on Saturday were heard loud and clear. We know that improving outcomes for our students requires support of educators, parents and community members. By alienating these groups and making policy decisions in spite of rather than with collaboration from stake-holders, the Governor and Ms. Skandera are undermining our state’s ability to succeed,” says AFT NM president Stephanie Ly.

“I want parents, community members and educators, to know that there is hope.  Together we are going to take back our schools and ensure we have great, positive learning environments for all students.”
